Altech legal win paves the way for greater competition

2 Sep 2008

The South African telco Altech has won a long-running legal battle which will allow it to deploy its own communications networks. The High Court decision will open the way for around 300 alternative carriers to begin offering services over their own infrastructure rather than relying on wholesale agreements with the handful of firms previously permitted to deploy networks. Altech has argued since 2004 that Value Added Network Services (Vans) licensees like itself should have the right to build out their own communications systems. Altech CEO Craig Venter commented: ‘For the industry as a whole this is a dramatic change in the landscape.’
