Digicel asks IFC for USD50 million for network rollout

1 Sep 2008

BNamericas is reporting that Irish-owned mobile operator Digicel Panama has requested a USD50 million loan from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank; the loan is to help finance the USD334 million build-out of the operator’s mobile network in Panama, according to the IFC’s website. The IFC’s board is expected to reach a decision by the end of the month on whether it will award the cellco the funds. Digicel won its Panamanian mobile licence in May 2008, paying USD86 million for the concession, and the operator expects to roll out its network before the end of 2008.
