Mobile operators set for interconnection discussions

Daily News Egypt is reporting that the three wireless players in the Egyptian market are to settle the issue of interconnectivity this week. The Egyptian Company for Mobile Services (MobiNil) has announced that it will meet with Vodafone Egypt and Etisalat Misr by the end of the week to reach a final agreement on the rates for interconnection; also believed to be taking part in the discussion is fixed line incumbent Telecom Egypt. The operators are aiming to resolve the matter before the start of Ramadan in September. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, the introduction of new player Etisalat in 2006 has impacted greatly on the mobile market in Egypt, with MobiNil claiming a market share of 47.21% and increasing its lead over Vodafone to almost two million subscribers by March 2008.
