Wataniya Palestine has confirmed that the Palestinian Ministry of Telecommunications (MTIT) has released the spectrum needed to begin commercial mobile network operations, according to online news source ITP.net. Wataniya is now expected to launch services in early 2009 and a report from the World Bank has suggested that the operator is targeting sign-ups of 400,000 in its first year of operation, with investment of approximately USD600 million expected over a three-year period. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Wataniya Palestine was awarded the country’s second mobile operator licence in September 2006, reportedly paying JOD251 million (USD352 million) for the combined 2G and 3G cellular concession.
