22 Aug 2008

Ancel plans to shut down its TDMA network by the end of 2008, writes BNAmericas, citing a report in local newspaper El Pais. Free GSM handsets will be provided to the 3% of the cellco’s users still using the outdated technology. Ancel’s GSM coverage encompasses 75% of Uruguay’s territory and 98% of the population, while its 3G network covers Montevideo and other cities such as Punta del Este. The report goes on to say that the operator recently announced plans to expand coverage further, by investing USD31 million in 2008 and USD50 million in 2009.
