Start-up mobile company QCell has been issued with a GSM network operating licence by Gambia’s Department of State for Communications, Information and Information Technology (DOSCIIT), bringing the country’s number of licensed GSM providers to four. QCell is owned by Muhammed Jah, CEO of QuantumNet, a privately owned Gambian ISP, and aims to launch ‘3G’ mobile services including voice, data and video. According to DOSCIIT, the licence was granted in line with a strategy of universal telecoms access strategy and the policies of Gambian president Yahya Jammeh, to ensure increased availability, affordability and reliability of modern communications services for the population. QCell will join the country’s existing GSM network operators Africell, Gamcel and Comium Mobile.
