ZACA asks government for update on satellite status

19 Aug 2008

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has asked the government and the Communications Authority of Zambia (CAZ) to clarify the current status of the Mwembeshi satellite following reports of international call failures, news source AllAfrica is reporting. ZACA has also called on the government to review the current infrastructure for existing providers, arguing that operators should be allowed to establish their own terrestrial links in neighbouring countries. ZACA executive secretary Muyunda Illionaga said, ‘other mobile telecommunication providers must be allowed to operate independent channels at a reasonable fee’. The comments come after Zamtel admitted that the increase in international call traffic to and from Zambia was a factor in recent disruptions to communications.
