SMARTS move by MTS

18 Aug 2008

Russia’s largest cellular operator by subscribers, Mobile TeleSystems, has filed a request with the Federal Anti-monopoly Service to gain approval for a takeover of smaller rival SMARTS Group. Privately-owned SMARTS, which offers services to just over four million subscribers in the Volga region, has been looking for a buyer for some time. The firm recently said that the buyer was likely to be one of Russia’s big three cellular operators – MTS, Vimpelcom or MegaFon. The deal is expected to be valued at around USD1 billion-USD1.5 billion.
