Tata Teleservices to spend USD2 billion on expansion

Indian telco Tata Teleservices (Tata) has set aside approximately INR80 billion (USD2 billion) for network expansion over the next 24 months, according to multiple Indian news sources. According to the press reports Tata Teleservices, part of the Tata Group conglomerate, plans to launch GSM services across India by March 2009 and BlackBerry services by September this year. It is understood that INR60 billion is to be spent on building a pan-India GSM network, with the rest of the funds used to strengthen the operator’s existing CDMA networks. Anil Sardana, Managing Director of Tata, also confirmed that the operator is aiming to reach 100 million CDMA subscribers and 55 million GSM customers by 2011.
