Latin American wireless operator America Movil (AM) has purchased 100% of Nicaraguan telco Estesa which provides cable TV, residential broadband and corporate data services. Financial details of the deal have not been released. AM is controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, and operates in 17 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and the US, and already operates a 3.5G HSPDA network in Nicaragua under its Claro brand name. The Mexican group also controls Nicaragua’s de facto monopoly wireline provider Enitel, which is also dominant in the country’s internet market via its ISP subsidiary TurboNett. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database records as of 30 June 2008 AM had 165.3 million mobile subscribers internationally.
