Japan’s third largest mobile operator Softbank Mobile added a net new 215,400 subscribers in July to end the month with more than 19.3 million customers. The company’s strong showing was bolstered by the launch of Apple’s iPhone 3G during the period which helped it record its largest net monthly gain for four months. Softbank again trumped its larger rivals NTT DoCoMo and KDDI in terms of subscriber gains, attracting more users on the back of its discounts and instalment payment plans. The cellco is banking on iPhone to continue the strong growth trend and increase revenues from data services in the coming months. It is the 15th month running that Softbank has bested its rivals in the scramble for mobile users. For its part, DoCoMo reported 94,200 net additions last month, for a total of 53.7 million, while KDDI gained 17,000, to end July with 30.3 million.
