The Romanian 3G operator RCS&RDS says its customer base has exceeded 1.1 million in the ten months since its launch. Subscriber take-up has been surprisingly quick for a market which is now home to five wireless operators; the firm reported 200,000 subscribers at the end of 2007 and this had grown 800,000 by the start of May. The customer total is expected to pass 1.5 million by end-2008. RCS&RDS says it now has networks in 180 cities across Romania. The firm also offers telephony, TV and internet services over cable networks and claims it had a total of 4.1 million revenue generating units in Romania by the end of June 2008.
Separately, rival cellco Cosmote says it is targeting 5.4 million subscribers by the end of 2008, up from 1.8 million at the start of the year and 4.6 million at end-June. Targets for end-2009 and end-2010 are 6.1 million and 6.6 million respectively, local newspaper Financiarul reports. Cosmote is the country’s third-largest cellular operator behind Orange and Vodafone.
