5 Aug 2008

The government of Sao Tome & Principe has approved a plan of the Sao Tome Telecommunications Company to connect its network to the West African Festoon System (WAFS) submarine cable network, reports MacauHub. The islands, off the northwestern coast of Gabon, will connect to WAFS via a landing station in Gabonese capital Libreville and the SAT3 submarine cable. The undersea link will give islanders improved international communications links and also give better quality transmission of voice, data and video. The Sao Tome Telecommunications Company, a 51%-owned subsidiary of Portugal Telecom (PT) will invest around USD15 million in the cable project, USD2.4 million from its own coffers and the remainder from investment partners.
