Ministry of Communications favours MIRS for WiMAX

4 Aug 2008

A report from Israeli news source Globes Online suggests that The Ministry of Communications (MoC) is set to back MIRS Communications (MIRS) in the upcoming auctions for WiMAX frequencies. A study of competitiveness in the cellular market is believed to have influenced the MoC’s decision, with the regulator convinced that backing MIRS would lead to the most competitive market conditions. The three largest cellcos in the Israeli market – Pelephone, Orange and Cellcom – are expected to be banned from taking part in the tender. The MoC has already granted MIRS permission for WiMAX trials in Tel Aviv and Askelon, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, although no date has been announced for these trials to begin.
