Rural telco CenturyTel reported second-quarter profit fell to USD92.2 million from USD112.3 million year-on-year. Operating revenue in the three months to 30 June rose 2.8% to USD657.1 million compared to USD639.1 million in second-quarter 2007. In the 2007 quarter the company received a USD30.2 million revenue settlement after resolving network access disputes.
The company added 107,000 new high speed internet customers year-on-year, taking its total to 607,000, up 21.4% from 500,000 twelve months previously. However, the number of access lines dropped 5.8% to 2.07 million from 2.20 million at end-June 2007.
CenturyTel has a presence in 25 states in small-to-mid-size cities through its broadband and fibre networks. Speaking about the company’s future plans, a spokesperson stated, ‘We continue to evaluate deployment and technology alternatives for our 700MHz spectrum and are currently leaning toward the same type of LTE-based deployment that has been discussed by the larger carriers.’
