Anatel: rule change for Oi’s BrT takeover ready by September

31 Jul 2008

Brazil’s telecommunications regulator Anatel expects to complete the necessary rule-change to allow Oi (formerly Telemar’s) takeover of rival telecom operator Brasil Telecom Participacoes (BrT) by the middle of September, an Anatel official said Wednesday. Dow Jones reports that the proposals are currently in the period of public consultation and, assuming that period is not extended, Anatel’s final report on the changes will be ready in 45 days from 1 August. The country’s telecoms lobby group Telcomp has asked that the public-consultation period be extended.
