Russian broadcaster Sistema Mass Media (SMM) has selected the NDS Unified Headend from UK-based firm NDS to manage and protect TV content delivery across IP and mobile networks, reports IPTV-News. CommsUpdate previously reported that the DVB-H based mobile TV service is available on a limited basis in Moscow with SMM planning to launch in 16 other Russian cities, whilst parent group Sistema’s cellular subsidiary MTS, the country’s leading mobile phone operator, intends to cooperate with SMM to market and develop mobile TV on a non-exclusive basis. Detailed launch plans for SMM’s IPTV service have not yet been released. SMM will use the NDS solution to deliver secure broadcast and video-on-demand (VoD) content services to set-top boxes, PCs and mobile devices, using a single system to control content distribution. According to Vitaly Shub, Deputy CEO of SMM, the NDS system enables the provision of ‘truly converged services to our customers…the flexibility to combine multiple platforms…and the opportunity to offer new advanced services in the future.’
