VTel inks deal with Alca-Lu for WiMAX network

24 Jul 2008

VTel Holdings, a Dubai-based telco, has selected Alcatel-Lucent to design, deploy and maintain Georgia’s first commercial 802.16e mobile WiMAX network for subsidiary company VTel Georgia. Services under the brand MAXIMALI will be launched in major cities by September 2008, with further investment over the next few years to cover the remaining parts of the country. ‘VTel Georgia is pioneering the introduction of WiMAX services in the region. Since January 2008, VTel Georgia has been running a WiMAX trial with a limited number of customers in Tbilisi and Batumi. The objective of the trial is to demonstrate the effectiveness of WIMAX technology,’ said Khaled Rifai, Chief Technical Officer of VTel Holdings.
