British triple-play provider Virgin Media is aiming to offer broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps by 2012, according a report by Reuters. An interview with Virgin’s Chief Technology Officer, Howard Watson, has revealed the plans, hot on the heels of rival BT’s announcement of a GBP3 billion investment in its own next generation broadband infrastructure earlier this month. Howard also confirmed that the roll out of technology boosting speeds to 50Mbps should be completed within twelve months. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Virgin is currently second placed in the UK broadband market, claiming 23.94% share at March 2008, with BT marginally ahead with 27.86%.
