DoT considering at least five 3G licences per circle

A report from news source Livemint is suggesting that, despite originally planning to auction just three 3G licences per circle, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is now considering at least five per region. With indications that the release of spectrum by the defence forces may be completed within four months, telecom secretary Siddarth Behura was reported to have said ‘We are looking at more than five operators in a circle, and this will depend on the availability of spectrum… It can be more in some circles’. Whilst policy is still being formulated for the auctions, leading mobile operator Bharti Airtel has backed plans to allow international operators to bid for the licences. Despite reservations from the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the cellco claims that the opening of bids to non-domestic companies will promote competition.
