15 Jul 2008

Power utility Empresa Electrica Quito (EEQ) has selected Canadian firm Corinex Communications to provide a broadband over power line (BPL) network in its home city, reports BNamericas. The infrastructure is to be deployed and operated by a consortium made up of telcos Telconet, Gilauco and Brightcell under a ten-year contract. When completed the network will span over 15,000km of EEQ’s electrical cables, and cover 800,000 residents in the capital. Users will have access to broadband internet access at connection speeds of between 256kbps and 1Mbps. The telcos have already begun work on the project and expect to complete the rollout in two and a half years.
