Number portability launches

15 Jul 2008

Number portability for Mexican mobile customers is now a reality, following the delayed launch of the service on 12 July. BNamericas noted that fixed line operator Telmex reported technical faults in almost a quarter of launch cities, although telecoms regulator Cofetel downplayed the difficulties. Cofetel claimed that 5,784 requests to port had been registered in the first two days of the service being available. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database the mobile market in Mexico is currently dominated by Telcel, with a 72.19% market share at March 2008.
