National register plan unveiled to curb mobile theft and related crime

15 Jul 2008

The government of Tanzania yesterday announced plans to register all mobile phone numbers in the country in a bid to curb the rising tide of mobile phone theft and related crime. Tanzania’s Communications, Science and Technology deputy minister Dr Maua Daftari told the National Assembly that the plans would, amongst other measures, require mobile network operators to register phone numbers when issuing new SIM cards. To date, the sale of SIM cards and phones has been called ‘haphazard’ at best, a fact which it is alleged has contributed to crime, including conspiracy and theft. Under the new proposals the regulator, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), has been asked to form a national committee to work out a scheme for recording and logging all mobile phone numbers in the country.
