Number portability delayed to 12 July

BNamericas has reported that the launch of number portability in Mexico will now take place on 12 July, having been delayed from 5 July. According to the report mobile operators had requested the delay, despite earlier insistence from the likes of Telcel and Movistar that they were prepared to offer the service. Operators have been told that the most they can charge for the service when it is activated is MXN17 (USD1.64), although it is expected some providers will absorb the one-off costs as an incentive to add new subscribers. Additionally Telcel is reported to be preparing the launch of a limited mobile video service, something that telecoms regulator Cofetel agreed would be allowed once the cellco had offered number portability.
