Belgacom takeover of Scarlet hits competition hurdle

8 Jul 2008

The Belgian Competition Council has said that it is concerned about former monopoly telecom operator Belgacom’s prospective takeover of internet service provider Scarlet. Stating that the deal could act as a ‘serious obstacle’ to competition in the country the competition authority has set a date of 26 September for a final decision on the case. The takeover was originally announced in February 2008, with Scarlet costing Belgacom EUR185 million (USD270 million).
