PacRim cable delay

4 Jul 2008

Rollout of the PacRim fibre-optic cable linking American Samoa to Hawaii has been pushed back to the first quarter of 2009. It was initially scheduled for November of this year but the cable-laying ship will not be available before December or January. The cable which now links Hawaii and New Zealand will be spliced with one end brought to American Samoa, which currently relies on satellites for international communications.

Parties in the PacRim project are the American Samoa Government, Telecom New Zealand (TNZ), US-based investment group Merchant Capital and Elandia, the parent company of American Samoan telco Blue Sky Communications.
