Ireland consults on next-generation broadband

4 Jul 2008

The Irish government has issued a consultation on proposals for broadband network expansion and upgrading, including achieving universal high speed internet access by 2010 and upping speeds to match EU counterparts by 2012. The country’s National Development Plan 2007-2013 earmarks investment of EUR435 million to achieve the targets, and the Communications Ministry has outlined specific policies such as the National Broadband Scheme to ensure that all requests for broadband access in currently unserved areas will be met by 2010. Another planned initiative would see the rollout of 100Mbps connections to all Irish secondary schools.
