CAT’s delayed fibre-optic rollout approved

The Bangkok Post reports that CAT Telecom has awarded a THB2.15 billion (USD65 million) fibre-optic network contract to Marubeni (Thailand), despite previous questions raised by the Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) over the project’s transparency. State auditors have objected five times to the project, officially known as the Automation Switched Optical Network (ASON), which will link all parts of the country with the capital Bangkok via 9,000km of fibre. A source familiar with the project said that in May the state-run telco’s board scrapped the bid after the Japanese-owned vendor’s technical proposals failed to meet CAT’s terms of reference.
