ComReg orders eircom to cut LLU line sharing costs

30 Jun 2008

Irish telecoms watchdog ComReg has ordered fixed line former monopoly eircom to slash the cost it charges its rivals to use its network under so-called Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) line sharing. The Irish Independent newspaper reports that the regulator has confirmed the interim measure it implemented in April this year calling on the incumbent to reduce LLU line sharing charges by 65% from EUR8.41 to EUR2.94 (USD13.28 to USD4.64). ComReg chairman John Doherty says the price reduction will have a beneficial impact on end-user prices in the months to come ‘in terms of price, quality and choice’. The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators (ALTO) has welcomed the news.
