Tanzania’s latest telecoms entrant was unveiled yesterday when Dovetel Limited announced it was launching services in the capital Dar es Salaam. The Daily News reports that the Director General of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), Mr John Nkhoma, hopes Dovetel’s arrival will increase ‘meaningful’ competition and drive down end-user tariffs. Dovetel has been granted a Network Facility Infrastructure Licence, a Network Service Licence, an Application Service Licence and frequency spectrum to use Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology. The newcomer hopes to develop products and services to fill gaps in the Tanzanian telecoms market. The company was founded in 2005 by its chairman Peter Chitamu, a Tanzanian who is a professor in telecommunication at Johannesburg University in South Africa.
