German MVNO developments

27 Jun 2008

German mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Ortel Mobile, which launched in September 2006 over the network of E-Plus, has announced that it signed up its one millionth customer in the country on 18 June. Ortel achieved the milestone in less than two years with a pre-paid strategy including low international call rates. Meanwhile, UK MVNO Blyk has announced it will expand to Germany, Belgium and Spain by next year, after signing up 100,000 customers to its free, advertising-funded, youth-orientated service since launching last September. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, there are at least 40 MVNOs and mobile services resellers active in the German market, of which the biggest by far is debitel, which has over 13 million subscribers after acquiring rival Talkline in August 2007, ahead of second-ranked freenet with more than 5.8 million MVNO customers.
