25 Jun 2008

Viet Nam News reports that US-based vendor Motorola yesterday signed contracts worth USD28 million with Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) for the expansion of its cellular subsidiary Vinaphone’s GSM network. Under the agreements more than 1,000 cell sites will be deployed in twelve northern provinces of Vietnam. Motorola said it will supply GSM infrastructure and a range of sevices including network optimisation and maintenance to expand Vinaphone’s network and services in suburban and rural areas. Shipments of equipment will begin later this year and the project is expected to be completed in 2009. Motorola and Vinaphone previously signed contracts in December 2007 to expand and enhance the cellco’s GSM network in major cities including Hanoi and HCM City. The two companies are also cooperating in expanding GPRS coverage and providing EDGE data services.
