Ancel claims to have expanded its 3G coverage ‘nationwide’, reports BNamericas citing local newspaper El Pais. The state-owned operator has deployed 104 base stations, 43 of which are in provinces with the rest in the capital Montevideo. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, the cellco was Uruguay’s first operator to launch 3G services. At the end of March 2008 it claimed top spot with a 37.9% share of the overall subscriber market, ahead of Telefonica-owned Movistar with 34.8% and America Movil-backed Claro with 27.3%.
