Telecompaper reports that Rwandatel is in the final stage of a plan to switch emphasis away from its CDMA-based WiLL network and launch a GSM network instead. The new network, which cost USD56 million to deploy, is expected to be launched by September 2008 and Rwandatel hopes it will allow it to better compete with existing GSM operator MTN. ‘We intend to have as many base stations as MTN. What they achieved in eight years, we hope to achieve in a period of one year,’ said Rwandatel marketing manager Victor Kinuma. According to CEO Patrick Kariningufu, the investment is part of the USD87 million pledged by Lap Green after the Libyan company acquired 80% of Rwandatel.
