NTT corners 32% of local IP telephony market

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp’s NTT West and NTT East regional operating units commanded a 32.2% of the local IP telephony market at the end of March 2008, the first time the state-backed operator’s VoIP subscriber market share has topped the 30% mark. Jiji Press, quoting the latest data published by the government, says that NTT’s market share in this segment has increased by 10.3% year-on-year and today it is the number one player in the VoIP market. It now leads Softbank BB Corp with 25.8% (down 7.4% y-o-y). NTT’s strategy is to offer VoIP services in tandem with its fibre-optic broadband service which currently accounts for around 72.2% (up 3.2%) of the country’s total fibre-optic broadband market.
