WiMAX patent pool established

Six firms have joined forces to create a group which will hold joint WiMAX patents in order to help establish a wider WiMAX ecosystem. The Open Patent Alliance (OPA), which brings together Cisco Systems, Intel, Sprint, Clearwire, Alcatel-Lucent and Samsung, has been formed to ‘advance a competitive and open intellectual property rights model, thus stimulating a larger WiMAX industry that supports innovation through broader choice and lower equipment and service costs for WiMAX technology, devices and applications globally.’ The individual members will retain the rights to their own patents, but the creation of the OPA makes it easier for other vendors and operators to licence their patents.

‘Intel’s vision in driving the formation of the Open Patent Alliance is to bring the openness of the internet and computing industries to the wireless industry and WiMAX,’ said Sriram Viswanathan, vice president of Intel Capital and general manager of Intel’s WiMAX programme office.
