Axtel launches in Matamoros; has Alestra in its sights?

9 Jun 2008

Axtel has launched a range of services including WiMAX in Matamoros, reports BNamericas citing a company note to the Mexican stock exchange. Axtel is investing USD20 million over a five-year period, and Matamoros is the fourth city in Tamaulipas state in which the telco has launched. Last year Axtel launched in ten new cities, bringing the total number of cities served to 27. The company offers voice, internet and data services. At the end of the first quarter of 2008 Axtel had 965,400 lines in service, up 18% year-on-year, and 81,000 broadband subscribers, up 30%.

Meanwhile, in a separate but related story, Axtel could be a potential buyer of rival fixed line operator Alestra, a franchise of US telco AT&T, claims newspaper El Semanario citing a report by brokerage Actinver.
