Meteor awards Ericsson contract for W-CDMA/HSPA

6 Jun 2008

Irish mobile operator Meteor Mobile has selected Ericsson as sole supplier of its W-CDMA/HSPA network, including microwave transmission equipment. Under the deal, the Swedish vendor will supply a W-CDMA/HSPA radio access network and a new microwave transmission network, it said. The cellco’s 3G network (supplied by Ericsson) currently covers just 10% of the population and it hopes to boost this to 33% coverage by September 2008, including the Dublin and Cork areas.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, the cellco added a net 13,000 new users in the three months to 31 March 2008 to end the period with 975,000 users, up 17% on the same time last year.
