Telefonica unit to invest USD384m in broadband

4 Jun 2008

Telefonica of Spain says its Brazilian telecoms unit will invest BRL623 million (USD384 million) this year to expand its broadband networks and services. Around BRL500 million of the total spend will be allocated to increase the unit’s ADSL network, with BRL123 million being set aside to improve its fibre-optic infrastructure. The CAPEX marks a ten-fold increase on the BRL510 million allocated for Telefonica Brazil’s pilot broadband projects in 2007, writes BNamericas. The unit hopes to extend broadband coverage to a further 400,000 households in 2008, building on the 2.2 million or so customers who already use its services in 407 Brazilian municipalities.
