According to BNamericas, citing local daily La Prensa, Movistar shut down its CDMA network on 31 May. The move follows a statement made by the Telefonica-subsidiary earlier in the year in which it said it was conducting marketing campaigns to offer its subscribers several packages to migrate to GSM technology, including free replacement of their CDMA SIM cards with GSM SIM cards. Meanwhile, Movistar Ecuador has announced plans to shut down its AMPS/TDMA network on 31 December 31 2008, while Costa Rican state telecoms monopoly ICE will start to switch off its TDMA lines starting in 2009.
