Nortel to upgrade Kabel BW network

29 May 2008

Regional German cableco Kabel BW has contracted Canadian vendor Nortel to upgrade its network with a ‘Communication Server 2000’ IP multimedia software switch, enabling the provision of ‘unified communications’ to businesses as well as expanding its residential triple-play offering of voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP), digital TV and internet access at 32Mbps/2.5Mbps downstream/upstream, twice the speeds previously available. The service expansion also enables Kabel BW to offer small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) additional service offerings such as videoconferencing and PBX functions. ‘With our latest network investment, Kabel BW will be able to generate new services for SMBs,’ said the cableco’s chief technical officer Uwe Baermann. According to a press release, with unified communications, multimedia conferences can be initiated with ease, calls can be taken with one click of the mouse, regional branches and remote workers can be connected, and the entire service can be facilitated and managed by Kabel BW.
