Cable outage disrupts PLDT, Smart services

29 May 2008

A double cable break in Philippine Long Distance Telephone’s (PLDT’s) digital fibre-optic network serving the Visayas and Mindanao regions caused severe disruption to its voice, data and internet services, and those of its subsidiary Smart Communications yesterday, the Cebu Daily News reports. The outage affected fixed line voice services, data services (internet), Smart’s GSM 2G/3G provision and Smart Bro wireless internet services, PLDT said. The first cable break involved a submarine cable between Bacolod City, Negros Occidental and Bantayan town, Cebu. The second damaged cable involved a terrestrial cable between Ormoc City and Tacloban City in Leyte province.
