Ono hatches ambitious 100Mbps plans

28 May 2008

Cableco Ono plans to launch a trial high speed broadband service of up to 100Mbps in the metropolitan area of Valladolid, reports Telecompaper citing a report in El Pais. Pending successful implantation of the pilot scheme, the operator hopes to launch the service commercially in Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona in the last quarter of 2008, before completing rollout in 2009. Spending worth EUR75 million (USD118.2 million) has been earmarked. No prices for the service have yet been revealed. Should the plan come to fruition, Ono will become the first operator in Spain to launch a nationwide 100Mbps service. Adamo currently offers the same speed connection but only in some villages of Asturias. Telefonica, for its part, is conducting 30Mbps pilot tests in Madrid and Barcelona, but no commercial launch has taken place. Telecompaper states that 72% of Spain’s eight million broadband customers have a connection somewhere between 2Mbps and 10Mbps.
