Number portability bill approved

27 May 2008

Ecuador’s constitutional assembly has approved a bill that will see the implementation of number portability (NP) by February 2009, reports BNamericas. The 130-member national assembly (which dissolved Congress in November 2007 following a referendum the previous April) ruled that telecoms council Conatel has a four-month period to determine and approve the regulations required for NP implementation. The assembly also issued a resolution to require mobile operators to offer customers that change providers a voicemail box for 90 days free of charge, from 1 January 2009 until NP is in operation. The bill was approved after a consensus between the authorities and the country’s three cellcos Conecel (Porta), Movistar Ecuador and Telecsa (Alegro).
