Wataniya to launch by end of year

23 May 2008

Kuwait’s National Mobile Telecommunications Co (also known as Wataniya) has said its Palestinian arm will launch the territories’ second mobile phone network by the end of 2008. Wataniya paid JOD251 million (USD354.3 million) for the licence to build a second network in the Palestinian territories in September 2006, but has been waiting for Israel to provide the requisite frequencies. Mohammad Mustafa, head of the Palestine Investment Fund (PIF), which owns 30% of Wataniya’s Palestinian operation said Israel had told the Palestinian Authority it was ‘committed to giving the frequencies.’ According to Mustafa some 2.4MHz of spectrum has already been handed over, with the same again expected before the end of the year.
