Packet One selects Oracle to support new WiMAX network; plans tie-ups

16 May 2008

Packet One Networks (P1), one of Malaysia’s four licensed WiMAX operators, has selected Oracle Communications’ Billing and Revenue Management to support its new WiMAX network, scheduled for rollout next month. P1, a subsidiary of Green Packet, is rolling out a 2.3GHz WiMAX network in Klang Valley, Penang and Johor, and will expand rapidly throughout West Malaysia in phases. It plans to provide coverage of 25% of the Malaysian population by the end of 2008 and 40% by the end of 2010. It expects to provide WiMAX coverage to 60% within five years.

In a separate story carried in the Malaysian press, parent Green Packet is reported to be aiming to strike at least two deals that will lead to a ‘technology collaboration’ or investment in the region. ‘We are in talks with various operators in South-East Asia and also the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). There are easily more than five WiMAX or aspiring WiMAX operators,’ group managing director and CEO Puan Chan Cheong told StarBiz.
