Earthlink to close Philly Wi-Fi network

14 May 2008

US ISP Earthlink is to close down its municipal Wi-Fi network in Philadelphia in mid-June after failing to resolve issues with city officials over the future of the public wireless access system. Earthlink had originally intended to transfer the ownership of the network to the city and a non-profit organisation so that residents would continue to receive wireless internet access, but the ISP says it has been unable to hammer out a deal and the USD17 million network will now be decommissioned.
