United Telecom Georgia reports that it has connected its network with that of Azerbaijani company Delta Telecom. The operator – which also connected its network to Turk Telekom’s through a fibre-optic cable in March 2008 – will gain additional internet capacity amounting to 2.5Gbps from Azerbaijan. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, at the end of 2007 United Telecom controlled about 60% of fixed telephone lines in Georgia, and served approximately 350,000 subscribers. In 2008 the company plans to grow its share of the internet subscriber market to 40%.
