TelstraClear’s cheap portal launch

8 May 2008

TelstraClear New Zealand’s second-largest telecoms provider launched its Clearnet beta portal yesterday. The site has been created entirely in-house and takes its name from the internet provider Telstra inherited when it bought Clear Communications in 2001. Group marketing manager Luke Patterson said, ‘It is DIY, but hopefully it won’t look DIY. We could have spent millions going out to external agencies but we realised we didn’t have to’. The company rejected the idea of creating a local version of Australian parent Telstra’s BigPond portal and instead used its own personnel to design everything from the portal’s media player to the Clearnet branding.
