China Mobile has revealed that it has so far invested RMB14.2 billion in installing a 3G network based on the country’s homegrown TD-SCDMA standard in eight cities. According to chairman Wang Jianzhou, his company has installed 14,300 base stations, including 3,400 in Beijing and 2,600 in Shanghai. .

On the much vaunted restructuring of the Chinese telecoms industry, Wang said preparatory work is under way but the company has yet to receive official notice of the start date. Chinese media speculate that the government will announce its plans as early as next week. Wang denied that the company is interested in acquiring African telecom operator MTN but said China Mobile does pay attention to the African market.
